Govt Committed For Gender Equality

In a statement issued on the occasion of the 95th International Women’s Day (March 8), Minister for Women, Children and Social Welfare, Durga Shrestha has said that the government is fully committed to achieve women’s equality and bring women into the mainstream of development in line with the commitments expressed through Convention for Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), Beijing declaration and other international instruments. She said that gender equality can be achieved if effective reforms are enforced. Meanwhile, president of UNFPA Thoraya Obaid Ahmad, in a statement released on the occasion of 95th International Women’s Day has reminded governments of the world to enforce the legislative and other commitments they have made for gender equality. Radio Nepal reports .


Forces Destroy Bomb Factory

The security forces raided and destroyed a bomb-making factory of the Maoists located in Devitar village in southern Chitawan district. The factory was found to be hiding a huge cache of explosives including 2000 home-made bombs. “The local people had tipped off the security forces about the bomb factory,” Royal Nepal Army Directorate said in a statement. The statement added that the unit had been set up to supply bombs to Maoist forces in Chitwan and western Gorkha and Dhading districts. “In the course of the operation, the security forces recovered a large cache of explosives including over 2000 units of socket bombs and other improvised explosive devices and a large quantity of raw materials used for making bombs, detonators and safety fuses,” it said. Some Maoists were also arrested from the factory site. Leading dailies report .


First Successful IVF Baby In Nepal

Om Hospital & Research center in Kathmandu achieved a pioneering success in the country by bringing about successful delivery of a baby through In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) process. Sandhya Tamang, an elated mother, gave birth to a healthy baby at the hospital on Thursday marking a history-making event for the country. According to Dr. Bhola Rijal, director of the hospital, the parents without babies can now expect to have their baby through modern technique of IVF within the country itself. Earlier, such parents had no alternative other than to travel to foreign countries for the purpose. The cost of undergoing the process in the country is also said to be significantly less at around Rs 250,000. Compiled from reports .


Swiss Have Not Yet Decided To Suspend Aid

The country director of Swiss Development Cooperation (SDC) in Nepal Jorge Freiden has said that Swiss government has not decided to suspend its development aid to Nepal. But due to the situation of conflict, our projects have run into difficulties, he told Kantipur Television. He added that although in the past the projects had sought the help and support of NGOs and civil society to run their programs, this possibility, too, has suffered after the imposition of state of emergency. The SDC is involved in several development projects in around 50 districts in the country. “We want all concerned to recognize the impartiality of our aid,” he said. Compiled from reports .


Apex Court To Have Full Bench Hearing On Non-Suspended Rights

The Supreme Court has decided to sort out the issue of whether or not to entertain the writ petitions on the non-suspended rights through a full bench hearing to be headed by the Chief Justice. The order was issued by a single bench of justice Ram Nagina Singh, responding to separate pleas filed at the Supreme Court challenging the rejection order passed by the SC registrar Shree Prasad Pundit last week. Pundit had rejected the petitions citing the suspension of Article 23, which guarantees the right to remedy of fundamental rights. Earlier, Attorney General Pawan Kumar Ojha had said that there would be no problem if non-suspended rights are exercised. Leading dailies report .


Bodies Of 46 Maoists Recovered From Clash Site In Bardiya  

Following the bitter clash between the security forces and the Maoists in Ganeshpur area of Mahmadpur VDC of Nepalgunj-Gulariya section of Bardiya district that lasted for a couple of hours on Monday (February 28), a huge casualty has been reported on the Maoist side. At least 46 dead bodies of Maoists were recovered from the site with security sources attributing local people as saying that the fleeing Maoists carried away additional 30 bodies with them. Four security personnel, too, died in the incident. The Royal Nepalese Army (RNA) Midwestern division chief Major General Deepak Bikram Rana said that although the army had got the information that wounded Maoists were receiving treatment at a health post in Magargadhi of the district, they did not intervene. “It is our conviction that once they are without arms and weapons, they are just like other Nepalese brothers and sisters. Besides, we are also committed to international humanitarian laws that allows health treatment of wounded ones,” Rana said. The clash had occurred after the Maoists attacked a team of security personnel who had gone to the area to clear the highway of obstructions posed by them. After the clash, the security personnel recovered 26 guns including two M 16, Insas, .303, SLR, LMG and SMG along with several rounds of ammunition. Compiled from reports .
