Mums The Word

Following the decision by the Ministry of Information and Communication, spokespersons appointed in various ministries have stopped giving any information. A journalist now needs to wait for the Information Minister Tanka Dhakal to make statement to know what is going on in different ministries. Appointed as a spokesperson of the present cabinet, Dhakal is one of the busiest ministers around. Under a circular of the Ministry, spokespersons of various ministries have been asked not to issue any statement without the ministry's consent. Already in tight schedule of visiting departments, ministries and corporations under his ministry, Dhakal now has additional job of informing about the matters of all other ministries and departments.

Khanal : Seizing the advantage

Sudden Sighting

Just a few days after the coup by his colleague Jhalnath Khanal, CPN-UML general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal suddenly appeared in public although he was under house arrest. Although he was traveling in his own private car, a reporter entrapped him. General secretary Nepal revealed that he was just roaming around but many see it has certain political message. Khanal, who is running his party through semi-underground leadership, is now trying to put all his men in key position of the party by removing Nepal-loyalists. General secretary Nepal's sudden appearance in the public shows that he could have ventured out because of political pressure that has come down to haunt his party.

Bijukchhe's Move

At a time when almost all other top leaders of political parties are in prison or under house arrest, president of Nepal Peasant and Worker Party Narayan Man Bijukchhe is a free man as he was released from house arrest a few weeks ago. As he is the only leader of agitating five parties who is free, former MP and powerful communist leader Bijukcche is busy nowadays giving interview to different newspapers. After Nepali Congress (Democratic) and CPN-UML's decision to join in the four party front, Bijukchhe is angry and has threatened to quit the front. Bijukchhe argued that the two parties were responsible for the present situation. Whatever he speaks, Bijukchhe's voice is all over media these days.

Giri's Silence

Even after three weeks of his appointment as a senior vice-chairman of the present cabinet, Tulsi Giri, former prime minister and a veteran politician, has addressed only a few programs and has been very rarely seen in the television. When vice chairman Giri, a powerful orator, was prime minister in the past, there were no televisions or other media. Now when there are five television channels and radio stations with nationwide reach, he is not seen as frequently as one would have thought. In his first encounter with the press following the oath-taking ceremony, vice chairman Giri's statements hogged the headlines of all the newspapers. Since then he has remained silent.

Thapa Also Quiet

Former prime minister and RPP leader Surya Bahadur Thapa, who is also known as a diehard opponent of vice chairman Giri, also remained mum for a quite a long time. After issuing a press statement following his release, former Prime Minister Thapa, a self-proclaimed liberal Pancha of Panchayat politics, seems to be in a wait and see position. As he has already postponed the proposed national convention of like-minded politicians, Thapa, too, has little options.
