Positive Article
Your cover story this issue was very positive in that it encourages the political parties to give up their stance and participate in the elections “ELECTIONS: There Is No Option To Middle Way” (SPOTLIGHT October 28). The imperativeness of reconciliation for a safe outlet to the present crisis can hardly be exaggerated. At such times, it is the role of the responsible media of the country to create a conducive environment for reconciliation and not cover issues that increase the rift between the existing forces. However, at present the majority of the media are engaged in the latter. You have done a laudable job by carrying a positive article towards this issue. But it is also the duty of media to ensure that the government takes every measures to ensure free and fair elections.

Characteristics Of Democrats
As a noted US politician has said ‘democracy is not a system, but a way of life’, there is a need for the political leaders of Nepal to develop a democratic way of life “ELECTIONS: There Is No Option To Middle Way” (SPOTLIGHT October 28). As elections is one mechanism, which sets up a people’s representation, I do not think any one would disagree that elections is the main characteristics of democracy. So, it is not important who announces the elections as long as the elections are held. After all, at one point the process of people’s representations begins from a person or a group that is not really people’s representative. Even if an all party government were formed, as the agitating parties are demanding it would not be a people’s representation technically. So, the political leaders should develop in themselves a democratic process by having the patience to listen to others and participating with them to resume the democratic process. Their stubbornness only delays the beginning of real democracy in Nepal.

Convincing Argument
You have convincingly argued that there is no option to the middle way at the present context through your cover story “ELECTIONS: There Is No Option To Middle Way” (SPOTLIGHT October 28). At a time when the country is at a severe crisis, both the political parties and the King should rise above their self-interest and find a meeting point so that they can contribute from their side to save the nation from losing its sovereignty. As you have written, King Gyanendra has opened avenue for reconciliation by announcing municipal elections. It is now for the parties to show some flexibility and participate in the elections. They should trust the King that he is in a process of transferring power to the people gradually.

Let’s Unite At Times Of Crisis
Nepal also falls in one of the dangerous red-zone areas of the earthquake “PAKISTAN’S EARTHQUAKE: Lessons For Nepal” (SPOTLIGHT October 28). My deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolence goes to the grieved families of those who were killed and maimed in the recent horrific earthquake in Pakistan and India. When the world can unite in the humanitarian issues, why cannot Pakistan and India forget about the past and unite? They have shown a good example by thinking about the present and set a good example to the world and to their neighboring countries. If all of us follow the suit , we and our future generation, all can live in peace and harmony without hatred and violence in the world. So, let us all forget the bitterness of the past and unite at such times of crisis on humanitarian grounds.

Relax Media Ordinance
If the state has good intentions for the nation and its people it should keep its ears open for healthy criticisms “MEDIA ORDINANCE: Absurd Amendment” (SPOTLIGHT October 28). It has not done a good job by issuing the new media ordinance that not only curtails individual’s rights to expression, but also shuts doors for healthy criticisms. How will the government know about the lapses and flaws in state affairs without a free media? And without, a mechanism to point out its mistakes and weaknesses how can it claim that it is delivering people oriented service? So, the government should immediately relax the harsh penalties and clauses in the new media ordinance in order to open grounds for healthy criticisms and improve its delivery to the people.

About Politicians
When terrorists hit Delhi or London, all political forces join hands with the Government to fight the terrorism. When terrorists hit Nepal, all political forces join hands with the Terrorists to fight the Government. National leaders of other countries fear a thing like Tsunami. National leaders of Nepal promise to bring “Tsunami” after Tihar and intellectuals praise them for that! Democratic forces of other countries demand election that the ruling government tries to avoid. Democratic forces of Nepal try to avoid election that the ruling government insists. National leaders of other countries call upon people to take part in election. National leaders of Nepal call upon people NOT to take part in election. To start with, the main issue was, “This government will not hold election”. Then it became, “This government can not hold election.” Then it became, “Lets boycott election”
