Informative Story

It is very pleasing to read international issues in Spotlight “China’s Miraculous March” (SPOTLIGHT November 18). The cover story is very informative. It not only gives an overview of the Chinese economy but also analyses how China was able to attain such an impressive growth. Hope to read similar materials in the forthcoming issues of Spotlight.

Learn From Chinese

The developing countries should learn from Chinese experience for a fast and balanced economic growth “China’s Miraculous March” (SPOTLIGHT November 18). It is not long before that China was like any other underdeveloped country in the world. However, as they have adopted systems according to the demand of the time, they have been able to achieve huge success in a short time. So, in my opinion, there is no need for developing or underdeveloped countries to fear from communism. China has shown that communism can be a very efficient tool to uplift national economy if handled honestly. However, as the Chinese example shows communism should not and cannot continue for long.

Bold Steps

Nepal has taken a bold and astute step by proposing China as a new member of SAARC in the thirteenth SAARC summit held in Dhaka, Bangladesh “SAARC SUMMIT: Hopeful Signs” (SPOTLIGHT November 18). The entry of China to SAARC would be beneficial to all small nations of the region in that it would end the monopoly and high handedness of India in regional matters. In fact, in the present context the constitution of SAARC is very imbalanced. Being the only powerful and large nation of the Association, India overrules in almost all matters of regional concern to suit its interests. The entry of China to the Association would help end this situation.

Convincing Argument

I agree with Dr. Surya Dhungel’s opinion on the issue of the forthcoming municipal elections “A Genuine And Credible Election Is Needed To Reactivate The Constitution” (SPOTLIGHT November 18). The Constitution of the Kingdom of Nepal, 1990, which is considered one of the most liberal constitutions of the world has not been active since the past few years. Even though, by now most of the articles of the Constitutions are not functioning, the dis-functioning began when the elections could not be held in time. So, it is clear that the elections are imperative for the constitution to function. What is also clear is that, even now if the elections can be held, then it will open avenue to reactivate the constitution. So, the political parties that are advocating for a total democracy should participate in the elections to reactivate the constitution.

Appropriate Subject

I liked the subject of the profile this week “RATNA SHUMSHER THAPA: Words Into Music” (SPOTLIGHT November 18). I have been a great fan of his poems and songs since a long time. It is a pleasant surprise to know that he used to write songs in already prepared melodies. The words he uses and the meaning his songs impart are so powerful that they easily touch anybody. I also thank you for revealing his personal life about failure in college and the subsequent twist in his life. I feel sorry that this failure caused him frustration in life that also led him to remain a bachelor for a long time. But, I assure that he has earned much respect and love in the hearts of millions of Nepalese like myself for what he has contributed to the Nepali music and literature.

Laudable Acts

I am very pleased that you carried the interview of two Japanese people Eiko Miyazawa and Toshiko Ariizumi, who have done a lot to improve the Nepalese education sector in this issue “We Will Continue To Involve In Helping Education Sector In Nepal” and “We Are Going To Have More Programs” (SPOTLIGHT November 18). Japanese people have been very generous and concerned about the welfare of Nepalese since long time. Their noble support to the underprivileged Nepalese people has helped a lot to improve their living standards. Such people should be encouraged by carrying their deeds in mass media as you have done.
