Nationalist Article

I liked the cover story of this issue very much “NC CONVENTION: Challenges On Leadership (SPOTLIGHT August 26)”. I found it very nationalistic and patriotic. As you have written in the story, this is a time of reconciliation for all the forces of the country and not confrontation. At a time when the country is going through severe crisis the leaders of Nepali Congress are not uniting, but confronting on vital issues. Whether they are driven by some power centers or not is something general people like us cannot understand. But, I totally agree with your argument that there is no leader in Nepali Congress who can lead the party as good as Koirala. I hope that all the readers and particularly the party workers will be convinced with your arguments and not question the leadership and actions of Koirala.

Public Concern

The upcoming general convention of Nepali Congress is significant to all the Nepalese in that the decisions and the policy it takes will not just affect the party, but the entire nation and its people “NC CONVENTION: Challenges On Leadership (SPOTLIGHT August 26)”. However, what is unfortunate is the party workers and leaders still do not seem to have realized their mistakes and united. From their actions and expressions, it seems that they are not much concerned about the future of the nation. The present day leaders who rose to their present position with massive support of the people have forgotten the promises they had made to the public. And over the years, during the time they were in government, they have already accumulated enough wealth to sustain them not only for their lifetime, but also enough for a few generations to come. Apparently, it is this very reason that the leaders are less concerned about how they can take the party ahead and carry people’s agenda with them. If the leaders claim that they carry the people’s agenda, they should come up vigorously with the policy to completely change the age-old social structure that is responsible for the failure of democracy time and again.

Biased Article

The cover story published on the eve of the eleventh general convention of Nepali Congress looks very biased to a general reader “NC CONVENTION: Challenges On Leadership (SPOTLIGHT August 26)”. The article is conspicuously tilted towards Girija Prasad Koirala. The author gives weak logic to support Girija Prasad Koirala’s leadership. At one place, the author writes that Koirala does not have his own philosophical ideology. And contradicting his own statement he writes later that Koirala is the only leader to have his stance on fundamental issues like multiparty democracy, constitutional monarchy and public oriented welfare economy. Aren’t these contradictory? And has Koirala actually worked for public oriented welfare economy? Isn’t it clear to all of us that Congress- under the leadership of Koirala did little for improving the state of the poor and underprivileged country? I do not know the motive behind such a biased article, but as a reader I can say that such an article could not have been objective for any reason.

A Shrewd Analysis

The article about the price hike of petroleum products was very well written and convincing “PETRO PRICE HIKE: Overdue Decision (SPOTLIGHT August 26)”. As you have written the rise and fall in the prices of any commodity in an open market is simple economics. It is true that petroleum products are very important for the consumers and everyone is affected by the price hike. But, it is also true that there is no option to increasing the price. One reason why the price hike of petroleum products is so dreaded by the public is its impact on other consumer goods. The price of almost all commodities rises with the rise in the price of diesel. This hike, however, is not always justifiable. The businessmen take advantage of the poor monitoring system. In fact, for many, the price hike in petroleum products becomes blessing in disguise. If their cost of production or buying cost rises by five percent they will increase their selling price by twenty percent. If the government wants to help people, it should increase supervision and monitoring of market so that the prices of consumer goods is not hiked unjustifiably in the name of petro price hike.

Diplomats’ Comments And Journalists’ Role

I felt very humiliated knowing that Ian Martin had given comments on the internal matters of our country without a proper study “MARTIN’S REMARKS ON MALLIK COMMISSION: Violating The Limits (SPOTLIGHT August 26)”. Thank you very much for informing the public and analyzing the situation properly. I do not know whether Martin’s comments are right or wrong. But I certainly know that diplomats should not comment on internal issues. It is here the role of journalists as watchdogs come. The journalists should be aware of these things and inform the public and alert the society through their writings.
