SHREE PURUSH DHAKAL

Lyrical Expressions

By THAKUR AMGAI

‘Ma Sapanako Kura Garchhu, Timi Ankhako Mol Sodhchhyau,
Ma Dhuk-dhukiko Bayan Garchhu, Timi Mutuko Taul Khojchhyau’

(I talk about dream, you ask the price of eyes,
I talk about heart beats, you ask the weight of the heart)

This song which keeps most listeners pondering for hours in search of its most appropriate meaning was written by Shree Purush Dhakal about two decades ago. The song later became very popular when Udit Narayan Jha sung it in the music of Alok Shree.

With songs like these, Dhakal has become very popular as a song writer among the audience of Nepalese modern songs.

His journey into song writing formally began when his song ‘Aja Bholi Mutubhitra Kaukuti Matrai Lagchha, Ke Bho Bho Aina Herda Afainsanga Laj Lagchha’ was recorded with the music composition of Shiva Shankar and voice of Meera Rana in the late 1970s. For almost two years after it was recorded, the song used to be continuously aired from Radio Nepal in the request programs and was played in almost every dance floors during that period.

Seeing this popularity, musicians and singers happily took songs from him. For Dhakal himself the popularity of this song became a great inspiration for continuing to write songs, something that he had never imagined during his childhood.

“I had never thought I would continue writing songs, let alone rise to this height,” said Dhakal.

Probably for this reason, Dhakal, who used to write since his early childhood did not save any of his creation during his schooling and college education.

Born in Sanepa, Kathmandu in 1955, Dhakal, was influenced by his brothers, sisters and his father to read literary works of the famous litterateurs of that time. He did his initial schooling at home under the guidance of his brothers and was admitted in School only in the fifth grade when he was eight. In School, literary activities would be his choice during the extracurricular sessions.

The passion continued when he joined college and his first poem got published in the year book of the college in 1970.

Dhakal started writing more extensively and documenting his poems only after 1975 and published some of his poems in the journals and magazines. After his first recorded song became very popular, Dhakal started focusing on writing songs.

Convinced of his quality creations, the musicians and singers soon started asking for his songs. However, this was not a profession for Dhakal. He was already into a government job and he had to steal time from his personal and family life to pen down his feelings.

In 1980s he also entered into writing songs for feature films. Dhakal has written songs for about a dozen feature films including ‘Didi’, ‘Nata’, ‘Paraighar’ among others. Some of his songs like ‘Barshatma Timi Rujhda Jhari Banu Lagyo Malai, Keshbata Tappa Chuhine Pani Banu Lagyo Malai’ have become very popular in recent years.

The younger generation knows Dhakal with his song ‘Mera Sathiharuko Majh’. “I was inspired to write this song when I overheard a group of girls talking about boys,” Dhakal recollects. “In those days we had virtually no interaction with girls and I was stunned on knowing that girls too talked about boys like the boys did about girls.” The song that was written about two decades back was recorded only a few years back in the voice of Babin Pradhan and music by Om Bikram Bista. This song also won him the best wordings in the Sanmiguel Music Award 2000.

To date Dhakal has more than 200 songs of different genre like modern songs, patriotic songs and Bhajans to his credit. Likewise, he has collected his songs in albums like ‘Maile Samjhen Ta Ke Birayan’, ‘Samyog’ and ‘Sanghar’.

For his contribution to the music industry he was awarded the Chhinnalata Geet Puraskar last year.
