Beauty Pageant 2005
Despite opposition and threat from communist parties including CPN-Maoist, Dabur Vatika Miss Nepal 2005 was successfully concluded selecting the new Dabur Vatika Miss Nepal 2005 at a special function held at Birendra International Convention Center .
When organizers were announcing the names of finalists, a group of extremist communists were opposing the move saying it is a derogatory to women. Although they are participating in the agitation championing the rights of individual, in reality they seem to be opposing the basic rights of individual.
Leaving eighteen contestants behind her, Sugarika K.C., 19, from Lalitpur, was crowned ‘Dabur Vatika Miss Nepal 2005’. K.C. was crowned at a program organized on September 10 after six-week-long grooming in the closed camps for nineteen contestants.
Confident and articulate, K.C. had answered “From my part, I would do everything I can and encourage my circle of friends to work not just for children in my country, but for the world,” in response to the question how she would help curb the disaster of hunger prevalent among the Nepalese children.
K.C., who also won the titles for Best Dress and Miss Talent will be representing Nepal in the Miss World Contest to be organized later this year in China .
Likewise, Shavona Shrestha was crowned the first runner up along with bagging the title of Miss Personality. Ayushma Pokharel was crowned the second runner up. Shrestha and Pokharel will be representing Nepal in Miss Asia Pacific Contest and Miss Earth Contest respectively.
The others who won the titles are Mohini Rana for Best Smile and Miss Photogenic, Soniya Giri for Best Hair and Sweta Khadka for Best Complexion.
The nineteen participants were chosen from about a hundred applications from around the country. Miss Nepal beauty pageant event this year is represented by ladies from various cities of the country including Dharan, Tanahun, Lahan, Syangja, Pokhara and Bhairahawa.
Ever since its inception in 1994, the event has never been free of controversy. A section of people has been criticizing the organizers for misusing the beauty of women for commercial purpose.
The pageant is organized by the Hidden Treasure and supported by Kathmandu Jaycees. Dabur Vatika has been sponsoring the program for the last four years. This years’ pageant has, for the first time, a purse of Rs. 1,00,000 and a Nova Scooter for the winner, and Rs. 60,000 and Rs 40,000 for the first and second runner-ups respectively.
