2nd SECOND IMPRESSION

Of  the corrupts and menace of corruption

Last weekend, the all-powerful opposition, UML,  exhibited its strength by bringing in its cadres from all over the country and hinted that if the party so desires to destabilize the incumbent establishment it can do so in minutes. The sea of men who had converged in Kathmandu were mostly the UML flag holders and the rest had apparently come to visit Kathmandu after the unceremonious exit of Krishna Prasad Bhattarai.

The current program of the UML leaders' is supposedly aimed at exposing the noted corrupts of the country. This is undoubtedly a very daring and courageous move. The lay men must have congratulated the party for this noble initiative. In some way or the other, the UML leaders have eased the investigation process that had to be initiated by the government in essence in tracing the declared corrupts. The government under strong-old boy- read G.P.Koirala- must thank the opposition. However, it also becomes equally important to note the fact that the duties which the opposition is doing at the moment remained under its jurisdiction or not? The UMLs present move also has amply delegated the powers to the lay men as well in tracing the corrupts who were eating the economic stamina of the country.

Let us analyse the current move of the UML and its possible effect on the country. Firstly, the UML has facilitated a process that will jolt the corrupts from within. It would also bring in a sort of mini earthquake in the all powerful Nepalese bureaucracy. Thirdly, it would some what console the ADB, the World Bank and the IMF top hats who would think that the nation has at last heeded to their instructions.

These all were positive gain that Nepal as a nation will bag from the ongoing movement of the UML.

However, surprising of it all is the total absence of the some very "famous good names" of the UML leaders who at different intervals of time were in the government and had earned the tag of being corrupts. The fresh list declared by the UML has only some names of the corrupts with whom the UML for obvious reasons did not enjoy amicable relations when in power. The list also has names who are identified as anti-UML. In addition to this the list of the corrupts smacks of political bias. For instance, Khum Bahadur Khadka, NC, and Bamdev Gautam, ML, both have been adjudged as corrupts. Clearly, the UML does not possess any love for these two political creatures belonging to the other camps.

It would have been nice if the UML dared to declare their own corrupt names. Perhaps the party that is the UML has left it for other parties to go in for a similar venture. Time permitting the Congress camp, more possibly minister Khadka, would do the needful. Thanks Almighty, minister Khadka has vowed to expose some leaders of the UML about whom he reportedly knows from tip to toe.

In all likelihood, the RPP and the NSP, the ML and other minor parties will make it a point to go in for a tit-for-tat the moment their leaders surface in the hit-list. Apparently, the whole nation will enjoy from such new adventuristic posture acquired by national parties. It would be some what I blame you, you blame me. The end result would be that the politicians and the leaders currently manning the system will all be dumped in the category of the corrupts.

This event will practically expose all who count these days in the eyes of the poverty stricken population.
