Of Nepali versions of Benazirs,Raos and and Estradas
Im not a student of Political Science. However, my association with the Nepalese political scientists over the years has definitely aroused in me some interest to study that discipline which governs politics of the nations. During these days Im reading a book on "Contemporary Political Ideologies: Movements and Regimes" authored by Roy C. Macrids from the Brandeis University, United States of America. The book offers so many things to learn for beginners like me who remain totally ignorant about the various ideologies, movements that have shaped politics at certain intervals of time and more so the book provides an opportunity to understand the behaviours of the political figures of the past who either have ruined their state or those who gave a concrete shape to democratic movements. Reading the chapter on Nazism and Fascism: Ideologies and Regimes, the author states a very funny sentence which has to do with the contributions, albeit negative ones, of the Nazis and the Fascists both. The author says: " It was said that the Italian Fascists made the Italian trains run on time; Hitler and the Nazis made the nation run in unison into disaster". Talking in lighter vein, what could be said in the context of Nepal is that since we do not have trains as such, save the Janakpur railways which is not even faster than a mule, so we need not worry in this regard. However, the congress led government could do well if it manages the ever ailing airliner of the nation fly on time. At least the Italian Fascists could manage their trains run on time. This was no less achievement in those days. Regarding the second sentence that touches upon the contribution of the Nazis and the Fuhrer in ruining the state, fortunately the ruling party appears toeing the same line which time permitting ruin the state much the same way as Hitler and his party did in the 40s. Albeit, who is the Fuhrer in the congress is a matter to be discussed and arrived at a final conclusion by the party activists. Since Im not their party activist, I leave it up to the congressmen themselves to decide who is or who will ruin Nepal at a later stage. While writing this, Im reminded of a media man who on last Saturday at a seminar on accountability and corruption made the remarks that must have sent chilling waves in the brains of the men manning the system and their hangers on. The media man, Mr. Kapil Kaphle said, " Im afraid that the disease of corruption at the highest political level has reached to such an chaotic extent that might invite some crackdown on the present system. My intention is not to create panic among the countrymen, but then the corruption factor possesses the potential for that eventuality to occur". This is what my august friend told the gathering of the noted intellectuals during question-answer session on that very day. Perhaps, the Nepali journo was serious in advising the countrymen of the impending threat to the system. The Pakistani event perhaps fits into our case if unfortunately that sad event happens. I further quote what Adolph Hitler wrote in his Mein Kamph. He writes, " There is no principle which is as false as that of parliamentarianism".
While I totally disagree with what the Fuhrer said in his famous book, but then some ingredients of truth could be found in our system of parliamentary democracy. Look at the state of the economy. Look at the mess in the educational sector and above all look at the apathy seen in the political parties towards the peoples pressing problems. Look how our parliamentarians used FORTRUMS-a life saving medicine exclusively used at the last moment; look how men parliamentarians could gulp the money meant for pregnant women; look at the manner our lawmakers enjoyed the Pajero/Prado vehicles at the cost of the national exchequer; look at how our men in the lower house wished to enjoy pension after retirement from the house and how the court had to come to the rescue of the innocent civilians; look at the manner the country-liquor drinking politicians of the recent past now have become the addict of Scotch Whiskey and finally look at the rag-bag-bobby-tail politicians of the recent past now possess five storied buildings and the likes. Is it not a corruption? If not then what it is? Adolph Hitler has his own type of hatred against parliamentary system. This we all know. However, the manner Nepalese political figures have been exhibiting their suddenly changed status which is disproportionate to their real earnings perhaps is the root cause that the majority of the population now possess some sort of confusion regarding the system now in place. People wish to see this system to continue. If some thing happens to this system, the leaders manning the system must shoulder the responsibility. Many Benazirs and hosts of Nawaz Sharief and P.V.Narsimha Raos will have to take shelter abroad. Which country will give them shelter could be discussed later. |
