Broken Nepali hearts and
agenda-less foreign trip
Thanks the sagacity of the United Nations
Headquarters that Prime Minister Koirala could at least take some respite from the
in-house non-ending hostility of the party, which "most fortunately" he heads.
Though Koiralas voyage to New York had already been finalized in advance yet the
timing of the foren outing has coincided at a time when the nations
Prime minister -concurrently the president of the party which has made him the Prime
minister needed some cheerful moments only to forget the bitter recent
past. The two weeks which the Nepalese Prime minister will spend in Europe and
America will undoubtedly provide him moments to study how the leaders of those countries
screw their party men at times of crisis. Since the Nepalese Prime Ministers visit
is "agenda-less" which means that he will have plenty of time in enriching his
brains with new ideas and tactics later to be applied in the nations context, more so
against his own party rebellions at time of the impending party convention. When the chief
of the delegation is himself on a program less tour, the job of the accompanying entourage
members could be guessed in advance. The Nepali delegation will in all likelihood buy half
of Europe and America as the Dashain festival has already come to our doorsteps. This they
would do at the cost of the national exchequer. Consider how happy would the children of
their family be when they will receive European and American shirts and toys. And consider
the negative impact on the kids of those who have hand to mouth problem every day. All in
the name of keeping the name of the nation high abroad.
A Prime minister who has miserably failed to
tame his own cabinet members could only be called as a lame-duck chief of the executive. A
party president who lives under permanent fear of being dislodged by his own party
activists could simply be taken as weak master. Finally, how such a personage can convince
the leaders or say the counterparts with whom he will have talks on "bilateral
ties" at the ramparts of the UN building. Indubitably, the leaders with whom our
Prime minister will be having bilateral parleys there will have by then be briefed by
their respective embassies in Kathmandu regarding the fresh "battle Royale"
which Koirala had with his nearest and dearest political rivals. Those who will greet
Koirala in the United States or in Europe will perhaps give much credence to the reports
sent by their missions in Kathmandu instead of our Prime ministers version.
Predictably, the Kathmandu based missions should have told their respective governments
that Nepal under Prime Minister Koirala is totally unstable and the people there have
already developed some sort disillusionment with the system now in place solely due to the
never ending conflict in the congress party for grabbing power and nothing else. And this
is a fact. We in this regard verbatim agree with what Communications minister Jay Prakash
Gupta told a media gathering the other day that if the hearts of the common men were
broken due to the non-performance of the leaders of the nation, such broken hearts would
facilitate the collapse of the democratic system currently in vogue in this Himalayan
Kingdom.
Minister Gupta is correct while he admits
these hard facts. The people definitely possess broken hearts. Just one example firstly:
the prices of sugar have swelled and so many other necessary common items, which the lay
men need at time of the festival, are missing from the market. And secondly consider the
bomb that fortunately did not explode at Sushil Koiralas house last week. This
perhaps tells the sorry state of Nepals law and order situation. When Sushil is not
safe in Nepal then no one else is safe to put it bluntly. However, Nepals Prime
minister is on a foreign trip that is considered to be agenda-less. Speaks of
Girijas avowal of providing good governance in the country.
It is high time that the international
democratic community based in Kathmandu scolds the congress and tells the party in no
uncertain terms that they would react to such intermittent ugly scenes in the congress
with stringent actions. If the responsible and democratic nations do not rise up to the
occasion will mean that they too wish the country going to the dogs. Thats all.
