Kathmandu to move Sthapit way! He could be considered a nationalist. It is equally true is that he preferred to quit the party when he sensed that the party he had been serving for years and years began exhibiting anti-national stances. He smelt conspiracy against his own country by the top hats of his own party at time of the Mahakali Treaty Ratification process. In the whole affair he apparently felt that his party leaders on whom he reposed immense trust and considered them as the true sons of this soil were being used as a "tool" to get the yet controversial said treaty endorsed by the nations parliament. He then appears to have made up his mind to severe his relations with the party for which he contributed a lot. The UML split thus and the leaders who differed to act as a tool of certain alien forces grouped themselves in a smaller party that was named the ML to be led by firebrand Bam Dev Gautam. Yes! Keshav Sthapit is the one about whom we have been talking in these columns. Sthapit while talking to Channel Nepal Television Network the other day revealed so many things that apparently expose the very close proximity of the then UML and its leaders with certain alien forces which through the UML wished to rob Nepal of its due rights from the Mahakali water project. The UML, to recall, till then claimed to be a strong-nationalist paraphernalia and used to give the people the impression that it is the single party, a communist outfit, which will ever remain dedicated to the nation and its prime national interests. Not very surprising then, the party won elections vehemently criticizing neighboring country and gave the Nepali people to understand that the neighboring country was nothing more than an expansionist power which has nourished ill intentions on Nepal and will continue to do so for varied and explainable reasons. However, todays reality is that the UML is perhaps the closest of all with that particular neighboring nation. Thanks the graciousness and sagacity of Madhav Kumar Nepal that the UML could now be counted as one of the best friends in Nepal for that country. It is here that Mr. Sthapits Television allegations have to be seen. Sthapit also mercifully revealed that his party once upon a time not in the distant past had instructed him for initiating horse-trading of some parliamentarians which he apparently did and bagged considerable success. His allegations does hint that the communists have done a job that they claim were the sole business of the congress party alone. Not very surprising then Mr. Sthapit secured as per the instructions of the party he served so loyally then a colossal amount from one businessman on condition that the party will later pay the amount back. However, this never happened. Instead, what happened is that, as per Mr. Sthapit, the business man was declared a smuggler which meant that the party was not morally bound to pay back the bill. All put together, a picture comes out that the UML neither is a nationalist party, even if it were any, was less interested in securing the gains for Nepal vis-à-vis other countries at time of bilateral negotiations and that the UML, if it so desires, can shake hands with even the smugglers to secure its political gains and concurrently could cheat the one who supports the party economically. Mr. Sthapit is currently the Katmandus municipalitys new chairman who is known for his aggressive functioning styles. He is the one who could be provided all the credits for whatever positive developments his mega-city has witnessed or achieved in the recent years. It is not surprising therefore that Mr. Sthapit would put all his efforts and energy in providing Kathmandu a new and beautiful shape. In effect, the new plans he has set this time for Kathmandu city appears to have been guided by his penchant to be remembered by the local citizens here for so many years to come. However, what sort of support he receives from his political friends and the citizens of the city will determine his accomplishments. Nevertheless, since he is an aggressive personality and means business and hence what could be concluded is that the native of the city itself will achieve if allowed to work for long. What must not be forgotten here is that he talks too much which could be his style for impressing his voters and the men in the media. However, what are his personal weaknesses is not a matter of our discussion today. What we wish to put on record here is that despite his supposed disqualification, he has done his job while being in that said post in the not too distant past.
