Excellence Award 2060, a tribute to excellence

Cursed is the society that disregards its own members at times of their need. Cursed is that civilization that thinks only of its benefits and prefers not to share its earnings for those who in effect need badly. After all those who earn from the very humanity have got to pay it back in one form or the other in the same society so that a practice follows for others to go after in the future.

Blessed is the human race which is inhabited by those who care for the needy members of the society and prefer to extend their minimum, as far as it could be made, support and act like a responsible member of the same community wherein they themselves live in. Sanctified and blessed is the community which possesses individuals, groups and institutions that remain in the forefront in extending their meager help to those destitute, neglected and the oppressed ones who could have changed their lot had they been supported by some one or some institutions at a time of their actual need. It has been wisely said that a meager support at time of real need means a lot for the one who actually needs that. It has also been seen that a timely support to a needy one(s) not only enhances his or her career but such support time permitting benefits the society as well. This gives explanation to the significance of help at time of dire need.

It is indeed a matter of real satisfaction to watch that Nepali society is still alive and kicking so far as supporting the deprived ones is concerned. A host of organized groups and institutions, small or bigger, have of late been exhibiting their concern over the deteriorating conditions of the society in various sectors and hence appear to have decided to offer their modest support to the members of the society so that their support at the end of the day served the very interest of the nation.

Leaving the fraudulent leaders apart, most of the influential sectors of the society, for example, the business community appears to be in the vanguard in sharing their sentimental attachments towards those who for want of money have so far not been able to exhibit their inner talents in the society. The most depressing news is that people in Nepal do not send their kids to schools for want of money. This is unacceptable. Going to the schools or for that matter receiving higher education has tentatively become the preserve of those who fall in the category of the haves and those fall in the other category are forced to remain in the dark.

It is in this connection we highly appreciate the role played by the Tuborg Excellence Award, an award initiated by the men at the Gorkha Brewery, which on an annual basis has been awarding those School Leaving Certificate examinations, who either top the list or become able to place themselves on the first ten list of the SLC board.

The process initiated by the Gorkha Brewery is worth praise as the money that the toppers receive in cash surely goes a long way in at least assuring them of the surety that they will get an opportunity in managing their entrance to the campus of colleges for higher studies. It has been seen at times that for want of money, hundreds of parents of promising students fail to admit their kids in the higher educational institutions. Secondly, such awards naturally enhance the confidence and the morale of the students and they in turn vow to take up the struggle that awaits them in the future.

The Chairman of the said Brewery, Mohan Gopal Khetan, rightly said that even if his company were producing Beer, considered to be an alcoholic beverage in Nepal but not in Europe, but yet the idea is to support the students who excel in their education at the SLC level so that the nation ultimately benefits from their expertise at a later stage. The intention, as per Khetan, is to produce enough homemade human resource so that the nation can proceed with its own resource personnel. We have reasons to believe what Mr. Khetan reiterated at time of the awarding presentation ceremony that his company were currently engaged in honoring other sectors of the society including media men. Laudable move indeed. All that we can presume is that Mr. Khetan and his team at the Brewery chose good-personalities, as they have done right now, from other sectors so that only those receive awards who in effect deserve. Awarding tom-dick and harry would serve no purpose.

Finally, the Tuborg Excellence award, let's presume, will be copied as an example by similar organizations so that a sort of process continues that ultimately benefits the society and thereby the nation which is what Mr. Khetan declared at time of the ceremony held the other day.
