Situation is worse!
Niraj Aryal
“The ambassador left for home as the consignments of non-lethal weapons were delivered to the Royal Nepal Army….”, I was reading news in the morning.
You know grandmother, “the most interesting part of this story is not what was delivered and when delivered but who delivered”, I asked.
My grand mother then replied, “Bharat (India) of course!”.
Oh! My Gosh…
She is not as thick as I used to think. Nevertheless what a guess? She is eighty-seven now.
“Be it a blockade of arms supply or opening of it, Nepali media covers it sincerely, why is it so?” asked my cousin. She was present there as I was talking to my ailing grandmom.
I told her sincerely, “I don’t know.” She is fifteen now.
Anyway the media hype is as usual applaudable.
If India is involved then this becomes news. It was something about Nepali media, wasn’t it?
Concern
And I told my cousin that, “For further delivery of arms Indian Government position vis-à-vis Nepal’s political development and its commitment to democracy will be on review on a continuous basis for some time to come”.
She questioned me again, “But the situation has worsened if not improved. So does it mean that India will stop supplying the arms?”
I preferred to keep mum this time; I really don’t know the Indian stance in Nepali issue. They say something and they do something else. I just shook head and she as a matter of logic smiled.
But she was correct (my cousin) when she said the situation has worsened. The Maoists are carrying out the mass killings outside the capital and as usual saying sorry for their mischief thus confusing the mass, the political parties routinely creating mayhem inside the capital and the royal trusted ones making life even more miserable all over the country.
For example, Mr Rana ex-RNA chief talking to a NGO a few days back shouted loudly, “Declare the Political parties as terrorists”. This way it is going to be worse.
The more interesting thing is that the recent Indian avowal on Nepal that the situation is not improving might hurt some in the ruling class like Mr Rana himself and there are always those who will be content with this development; for your information they are those who are in the street at the moment.
My cousin asked me again, “So what next?” She had full of questions that day.
Then I replied, “Perhaps an economic blockade”. Or at best a threat of such a blockade for the time being.
“What.. Again?” She looked stressed this time. She was still listening to us carefully.
She then remembered the long queue for the sugar and the waiting under the sun the whole day for a liter of kerosene. She was strong then and now she cannot do it anymore.
“Then, do it India. This may help us unite”, exclaimed loudly my cousin.
Be happy
Now I remember last week I had an opportunity to read on the Internet version of a Nepali Weekly, an article on how we should act with India so that she is always happy with us.
Supposedly a Nepalese and a well known columnist in a Nepali Weekly last week on his regular column claimed that we the Nepalese should learn from our past mistakes and be afraid of a possible another India imposed economic blockade. I hope this represents his personal views and not an example of propagating Indian interest through Nepali media.
Don’t be a puppet, please! But he holds the clues on making her dearest ones happy. India is always unhappy. Should we follow him?
