Exposed to the point of no return
Niraj Aryal
Last weekend, the Indian establishment and the media there were presumably taken aback with the unanticipated moves executed in an astronomical speed by the Royal Nepalese Army and the Nepalese Government respectively exposing the Indian link with the Maoists and to rap the Indian establishment, accusing them of muddling in Nepali matters unnecessarily and that too clandestinely.
Probably the first offensive move made by the Nepali establishment since 1989, then the public had to suffer almost sixteen months of Rajiv Gandhi imposed economic blockade which lasted till 1990 June 10. And the end of which saw the restoration of democracy, molded in Indian tarika more so the Laloo's bihari way.
Otherwise non-performing, the current government, except criticizing the political leaders has not performed as publicized celebrating its 100 days at the office, this time though has executed its diplomatic move carefully. The occasion chosen in a perfect way as reported in some Indian newspapers as the Indian envoy sought Nepal 's support for his country's bid to become a permanent member in the UN Security Council.
In yet another incident at a hurriedly called (as reported outside the country, remember hurriedly) press-conference by the Royal Nepalese Army, unexpected happened as the RNA successfully exposed the links Indian establishment enjoyed perenially with the rebels in Nepal . The Indian embassy here also hurriedly released its version by declaring, “From what has been reported, it is quite evident that the allegations against India are completely false, baseless and far-fetched.”
The links the Jawahar Lal Nehru University graduate, the brilliant son of Nepali soil, the architectural engineer, the ousted leader Baburam Bhattarai in the Maoists camp, who in his own words “Learned the ABC of Marxism in India”, was always under close scrutiny, thus was exposed through an audio tape recovered by the RNA during its search operation.
This revealed that the Indians without sparing this opportunity,(the removal of Baburam from the party leadership) had bargained with the Maoists leaders to re-instate Baburam to his previous position for the release of two Maoists leaders imprisoned in India who they had previously agreed to free. Idhar bhi aapka, udhar bhi aapka ,fir bhi kartenrahein inkar, achha hai kyun?
The RNA adventure to expose India thus adds few more tips to the Indian Game Plan in Nepal .
The Indian embassy press-release quite rightly indicates on the one hand in their own words “India has been assisting the Royal Nepalese Army in various ways to deal with the challenges posed by the Maoists”, and this incident which exposed their links with the rebels in Nepal amply suggests their historical double standard (after independence in 1947 -the first Indian PM Jawahar Lal Nehru claimed the Himalayas as their northern border), in the Nepali situation, as suggested by a veteran Indian writer Kuldip Nayar in Deccan Herald May 4, 2005.
Talking to the BBC Nepali service Ashok Mehta, an Indian security expert last week in line with the exposed Indian stance of nurturing the Maoists in Nepal stressed “It is important the Maoists army did not disintegrate —in the point of view of `balance of power’ within Nepal .
Leaders in Nepal are yet to comment on these issues of “Nation Interest”, who are still seeking Indian backing for the so-called protests- to date which has not been able to draw popular backing.
Are Washington and London listening to the RNA's audio tape?
