What type of air is called “polluted”?
Air with maximum quantity of dust particles is called polluted air. When dust particles increase, the air is more polluted. When dust particle decreases, the air is less polluted or good in quality.
What is “PM10”?
PM10 is a measurement unit for dust particles present in the air. In technical terms, PM10 means Particulate Matter with diameter less than or equal to 10 micrometer. Its measurement unit is microgram per cubic meter.
What are the types of air quality?
There are five levels of air quality depending upon the amount of dust. They are as follows:

Where are the air quality stations?
Air Quality of Kathmandu Valley is recorded at six stations daily, but the data is compiled on a weekly basis. The six stations are Putali Sadak, Matsyagaon, Tribhuvan University, Bhaktapur, Patan Hospital and Thamel.
Ministry of Environment and Population runs the stations under the assistance of Danish agency, Danida.
Capital air quality deteriorates What is PM10 ?
The pollution level in all monitoring stations of the Kathmandu Valley except Matsyagaon and Thamel deteriorated from November 27 to December 03 as compared to the previous week.
According to the data recorded by the Ministry of Environment and Population, the weekly averages of the air pollution levels (based on the daily averages) registered an increase in five monitoring stations.
The Matsyagaon area registered some improvement in the air quality during the period with the pollution level decreasing to 36.42 PM 10 from 47.8 PM10. Likewise the pollution level of the Thamel area decreased to 145.57PM10 down from 150.5PM10 of the previous week.

The Putalisadak area monitoring station was the most polluted site recording a weekly average of 250.28 PM10, up from the previous period's 246.3PM10. The area recorded ‘unhealthy’ air marks throughout the week.
Patan Hospital and Thamel area was the second most polluted site in the Valley during the period recording a weekly average of 204.57PM10 up from 162.85PM10.
Bhaktapur and Kirtipur area recorded a weekly average of 127.00 PM10 and 6271 PM10 respectively up from 109.0PM10 and 54.0PM10.
Four day’s data of the Bhaktapur monitoring station were not available.

Capital air quality ‘unhealthy’ What is PM10 ?
The pollution levels in different city areas of Kathmandu Valley was 'unhealthy' from November 20 to November 26.
According to the data recorded by the Ministry of Environment and Population, the Putalisadak, Patan Hospital and Thamel area recorded unhealthy marks throughout the week.
The Putalisadak area was the most polluted side throughout the week with its pollution at 246.3 PM 10 during the week.
Patan Hospital and Thamel area were the second and third polluted sides respectively recording pollution levels at 162.8 PM 10 and 150.5 PM10 respectively.

The Bhaktapur, Kirtipur and Matsyagaon area monitoring stations recorded 109 PM10, 54.6 PM10 and 47.8 PM10 respectively.
The Bhaktapur monitoring station recorded moderate air pollution levels, while Kirtipur and Matsyagaon recorded good air marks throughout the week.
One day’s data of Putalisadak monitoring station and three day’s data of Bhaktapur area were not available.
