Nepal bags all 6 gold medals in karate; Crown Prince gives away medals

Kathmandu, Sept 26:
Nepal bagged six gold medals and one bronze on the first day of 8th SAF Games held in Kathmandu.

All the six gold medals Nepalese players won in karate. Those Nepalese players who bagged gold medals are: Ganga Ram Maharjan, Deepak Shrestha, Priti Dangol, Nita Rai. Two more gold medals were won in group karate kata demonstration games( in both male and female).

Nepal emerged winner in all the karate events held today. In 42-kilometer men’s marathon, Nepal’s Ganesh Rai bagged a bronze medal.

With six gold and one bronze medals, Nepal is in second position in terms of medals in the 8th SAF Games. 

India won 13 gold medals and Sri Lanka two. Other SAARC nations so far have not won any gold medals. Crown Prince Dipendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev gave away medals to the winners.


Nepal beat Bhutan in Football by 7-0; India defeat Pakistan by 5-2

Kathmandu, Sept 26:
Nepal defeated Bhutan in the preliminary league round of football game under 8th SAF Games played in Dasarath Stadium today. Nepal’s Hari Khadka and Basanta Thapa scored two goals each against Bhutan, while Deepak Amatya, Rajan Rayamajhi, Naresh Joshi scored one goal each.

Right from the beginning, Nepali team dominated the game and demonstrated excellent performance in the whole game. In the foot ball game played earlier today, India beat rival Pakistan by 5-2. India’s I. R. Vijayan scored three goals to make India winner in the football. Pakistan’s Gohar Zaman scored beautiful goal through his bicycle kick, which was appreciated by all audiences. Despite good performance of Pakistan, India maintained its domination throughout the game.

Nepal bags 3 more gold medals

Kathmandu, Sept 27:
Nepal bagged 3 more gold medal in karate today. Nepal now has won nine gold medals, all in karate, and has been in second position in terms of gold medal in the 8th SAF Games being held in Kathmandu. Those who won gold medal for Nepal today are:

1. Mina Pathak in less than 53 kg category of karate
2. Junu Rai in less than 60 kg category of karate
3. Surendra Lal Shrestha in less than 70 kg category of karate.

Similarly, Durga Niraula won silver medal in less than 80-kg category of
karate and Gyan Bahadur Bohora won silver medal in 5000-meter marathon.
Nepal’s Makesndra Bahadur Singh won a bronze medal in less than 50
category of karate.

Nepal so far has won 9 gold medals, 2 silver and 4 bronze medals.


Maldives defeat Bangladesh in football; enter into semi-final

Kathmandu, Sept 27:
Maldives beat Bangladesh by 2-1 in the preliminary league round of football match being played under 8th SAF Games in Kathmandu. By defeating Bangladesh, Maldives has scored six points and entered into semi-final, which will be the knockout round.

Maldives had already beaten Sri Lanka. In today’s tough match, Ali Shahim scored the first goal and Mohammad Nizam scored second goal for Maldives.
Despite beautiful performance of the Bangladesh players, their relatively weaker defense paved way for Maldives to have 2-1 win against Bangladesh. Bangladesh scored one goal towards the end of the game or in 46th minute. Although Bangladeh players had changed their tactics and had gone offensive, time did not permit them to have another goal.

Bangladesh will have to play with Sri Lanka. The game between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will be do or die match because one which wins that game would enter into semi-final. There will be two matches tomorrow. The match will be played between India and Bhutan and second match will be played between Nepal and Pakistan.


Ninth SAF Games to be held in Islamabad

Kathmandu, Sept 28:
The 9th South Asian Federation (SAF) Games is to be held in Islamabad of Pakistan, it was announced in the press conference organized here by the
Pakistan Olympic Committee.

Chairman of the Pakistan Olympic Committee Wazid Ali Shaha said that there would be 14 different sporting events in the 9th SAF Games to be held in Islamabad. The two news events to be included in the ninth SAF Games are badminton and squash.

Pakistan is capable enough to host the ninth SAF Games and is keenly awaiting the regional sporting events, he said. The dates of the ninth SAF Games are to be decided later.


Nepal adds five more gold to its medal tally; increases gold medals to 14

Kathmandu, Sept 28:
Nepal today won five more gold medals on the fourth day of 8th SAF Games
being held in Kathmandu. Nepal won all five gold medals today in different events of karate. The gold medals of Nepal have now been increased to 14. Those who won gold medals today are: Ravi Maharjan in men’s under 55-kg category of karate; Dhoj Man Moktan in men’s under 65-kg category of karate; Rajesh Shrestha in men’s under 75 kg category of karate; Krishna Gurung men’s over 80 kg category of karate; and Binita Joshi in women’s over 60 kg category of karate.
Nepal won gold in all five events of karate played today. 

Similarly, Nepal won one bronze medal in 4X200 swimming event today. With its 14 gold, two silver and five bronze medals, Nepal has ranked second in terms of the number of gold medals in the 8th SAF Games. 

India has continued its domination in 8th SAF Games winning 85 medals
including 37 gold, 34 silver and 14 bronze medals. Sri Lanka is in the third with 10 gold, 16 silver and 30 bronze medals.


Nepal defeat Pakistan in football; enters into semifinal

Kathmandu, Sept 28:
In a second game played between Nepal and Pakistan, the host Nepal beat
its rival Pakistan by 3-1 goals today. This is the second consecutive victory of Nepal in football. With the victory over Pakistan, Nepal has scored 6 points and has entered into semi-final. Nepal had already defeated Bhutan by 7-0. Pakistan’s chance of going to semifinal has been dashed as it lost both the games it played. Pakistan also lost to India in the match played on last Sunday.

Nepal’s Hari Khadka and Bal Gopal Maharaja scored one each goal while Nepal benefited from one suicidal goal by Pakistan player. Gohar Zaman scored single goal for Pakistan.

Pakistan played defensive game throughout the match. Nepal played offensive from the beginning. After scoring three goals, Nepal slightly changed its strategy and played defensive to prevent Pakistan from adding more goals.

India defeat Bhutan

In the first football game, India beat Bhutan by 3-0. I.N. Vijayan’s hat-trick led India to enter into semifinal. Vijayan had also done hat-trick in the game played with Pakistan on Sunday. India also scored 6 points by winning two consecutive games. India has already defeated Pakistan.

Nepal wins one more gold today increasing its gold medals to 15

Kathmandu, September 29:
Nepal won one more gold medal today in the 8th SAF Games being played in Kathmandu.

Stuti Singh, Rubina Pradhan, Runa Shakya and Nayana Shakya won the gold
medal for Nepal in women’s 4X100-meter relay category of swimming. Similarly, Nepal added four bronze medals to its medal tally today.

Those who won bronze medals are:

Yam Bahadur Pudasaini in Athletics ( Men’s 10,000 meter)
Khursid Ahamed Khan in men’s javelin throws,
Devi Maya Paneru, Kesh Maya Shrish, Bina Shrestha and Hari Maya Chaudhari in women’s 4X400-meter relay race;
Shusmita Thapa, Bina Shrestha, Devi Maya Paneru and Samigya Shakya in
4X100 meter relay race.

Nepal so far has bagged 26 medals in the 8th SAF Games including 15
gold, 2 silver and 9 bronze medals.

India continued to dominate in the fifth day of the SAF Games. It has so
far won 112 medals including 53 gold.

Nepal is second and Sri Lanka is third with 76 medals including 14
golds. 
Bhutan so far has not won any medal.
