Skincare is not just about your DNA but also your day-to-day habits.

While many may suspect they may have dry, oily or sensitive skin, it is very important to be sure what your skin type is.

Not only will it help you find the right product for your skin but also help you from following a lot of skin hacks that can worsen acne, dryness or even other skin problems.

There are numerous suggestions on skincare routine from how to moisturise your skin to treating your acne scars.

But many of the DIY hacks such as using lemon juice, baking soda and toothpaste can harm your skin. It can cause dry skin and skin irritation.

So how should we follow a routine that is right for your skin?

Building a skincare routine

No matter what skin type you have got, it is important to build a skincare routine that you can follow every day. It can help get healthy skin, and improve acne, scarring and dark spots.

There are basic steps you can follow for your day-to-day routine.

1. Cleansing: Washing your face is an important step. Clean your face twice a day and only once if your skin is dry using cleanser that does not leave your skin feeling tight. Do not scrub your skin every day as it will wash away your natural skin oil as well which will leave your skin looking dry.

2. Moisturise: No matter what your skin type is, it is important to moisturise your skin. For oily skin use products that are lightweight, gel-based that do not block your pores. And as for dry skin they will benefit from more cream-based moisturisers.

3. Use sunscreen: Right now we are all staying inside and we do not really get to go outside. But when you do get to step out of the house, do not forget to put on your sunscreen 15 minutes before you leave as it takes time for the sunscreen to activate. Darker skin needs more protection from the sun because hyperpigmentation is harder to pigment.

Eating healthy!

Your eating habit can also affect your skin. Eating healthy will help you look and feel great. High-processed food that has high amounts of unhealthy fat and carbohydrates such as junk food and fast food can cause more acne. So, eating vegetables, fruits, whole grains and lean protein will keep your skin healthy. And don’t forget, drinking lots of water keeps your skin hydrated.

Treat your skin gently

Taking a shower every day with extremely hot water and shaving can negatively affect your skin. Although taking a long hot bath feels good it is not good for your skin as it may remove all of the natural oil. Limit your bath time and use warm water. Also try avoiding strong soaps that can leave your skin feeling dry. It can also cause skin irritation and allergies.

Before shaving, use shaving cream and shave in the direction where the skin is growing, not against it.

Stress management

Stress can also cause an acne break out and other skin problems. Having a good sleeping routine and having a healthy state of mind can help your skin. Also, if you are a smoker, you must know smoking makes your skin look old and increases wrinkles at a young age. The toxins in cigarette smoking damages the collagen and elastin which are the components that help keep skin firm.

So, the best way to keep your skin young and healthy is to quit smoking!
