Home Minister Thapa, six other ministers lose their portfolios

Supreme Court issues interim order stating their appointments unconstitutional

Seven ministers of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s Cabinet have been relieved of their posts.

The Supreme Court issued a verdict today stating that the appointment of the concerned seven ministers was unconstitutional due to which they have been relieved of their positions.

The Supreme Court has stated that reappointing people who are not parliamentarians to the post of ministers is unconstitutional. A single bench of Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher JB Rana mentioned that as per Article 78 of the Constitution of Nepal a person who is not a member of the federal parliament can be appointed as minister only once for a maximum period of six months while issuing the interim order. Along with this decision, Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa along with six other ministers has been relieved of their positions.

The other ministers who have been relieved of their positions are Minister of Industry, Commerce and Supplies Lekhraj Bhatta; Minister of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Top Bahadur Rayamajhi; Minister of Urban Development Prabhu Sah; Minister of Water Supply Mani Chandra Thapa; Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Security Gaurishankar Chaudhari; and Minister of Youth and Sports Dawa Lama Tamang.

Chief Justice Rana passed the verdict today on a writ petition filed by advocates Kapil Dev Dhakal and Biraj Thapa.
